Only a girl's love by Charles Garvice
The Story
Lillian stays with a rich aunt during the London season. She meets Ralph Armitage, a dashing captain in the army, and instantly loses her heart. But there’s a problem: Ralph is engaged to another woman—young and innocent Olive—and Lillian’s pride won’t let her steal her. Out of jealousy, Oliver Fairfax (Ralph’s rival) tells nasty lies that cause a breakup, and Ralph flees abroad. Lillian gets sick for months. Years later, Ralph is back and in huge trouble. He killed a man in a duel, his family name is ruined, and the police want him. While running away, he writes a desperate letter to the girl he once adored—Lillian. She reads it and discovers the truth: he loved her after all. But can she trust him again? The drama heats up as secrets, family ties, and scandal push them apart.
Why You Should Read It
Charles Garvice writes like a modern soap opera—big emotions, dangerous secrets, and a love that feels like a storm. You’ll read paragraphs that make your heart pound (like when the lovers have almost missed their big chance). Characters like Lillian are complex—sometimes too trusting, but finally growing courage. And Olive’s nasty jealousy pops up just in time. This old novel (published years ago) actually hits you today because we all know heartache like Lillian’s a whole universe of grief inside one small wish. The plot spins fast and ties up every thread. Plus, it shows how ruined women could be in Victorian times without marriage or money. Not too heavy, but it will definitely get you misty-eyed.
Final Verdict
Perfect for lovers of secrets, class chic or tragedy. If you love Jane Eyre grit but with two British love rivals and court whispers, this is your cup of tea. One caveat: the plot bends itself a little. Yet patience feels like candlelight in this bighearted book. Pick it up Sunday on your night pillow and cry softly—or share with a gal pal for debate.
